The Fosa Madagasikara Association was created in 2023 thanks to the initiative of Luke Dollar (PhD) and Conservation Allies.
In 2008, well before becoming an association, its first activities focused on monitoring the Fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) organised by Luke Dollar. The latter had already been carrying out research in Madagascar since 1999.
The first members of the team, known as the Fosa Team at the time, consisted of students from the village of Andranofasika, located 4km from the entrance of Ankarafantsika National Park. Other youngs decided to work hard in school and at university to join the team.
Activities are evolving thanks to the arrival of Malagasy and foreign research students. Fosa Team members helped them during their stay as research guides.
At the same time, a strong link was established between the MNP (Madagascar National Parks: the park manager) and the team. The main activities involved research projects, education, raising awareness of the need to preserve the park and the creation of a women's association.
Since 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the support of Conservation Allies, the Association has been able to participate in and strengthen patrols in the parc d'Ankarafantsika.
The creation of the Association des Femmes issues des alentours d'Ankarafantsika has enabled women to be directly involved in development activities. They are responsible for maintaining the campsites, catering and accommodating visitors (especially researchers). They work in close collaboration with the Fosa Association.
In the near future, the Fosa Madagasikara Association plans to expand its areas of intervention and activities throughout Madagascar.
